Corrtest Three Electrode Potentiostat CS350M Galvanostat And Potentiostat

Three electrode potentiostat CS350M consists of DDS arbitrary function generator, high power potentiostat/galvanostat, dual-channel correlation analyzer, dual-channel high-speed 16bit/high-precision 24bit AD converter and extension interfaces. Max. current is ±2A, potential range is ±10V. EIS frequency range is 10uHz~1MHz. It can be used for various electrochemical fields such as corrosion, energy, material and electroanalysis. The current can be boosted up to 20A/40A with a current booster CS2020B/ CS2040B. Three electrode potentiostat CS350M cannot only measure the 3-electrode system, but also be applied for other configurations.


What is three electrode system?

The three electrode system consists of a working electrode, counter electrode, and reference electrode. The reference electrode's role is to act as a reference in measuring and controlling the working electrode potential, without passing any current. Most of the electrochemical tests are 3-electrodes system.

A: Yes. Three electrode potentiostat CS350M is a versatile and comprehension tool for all the electrochemical measurements.


Q: What’s the difference between 2-electrode and 3-electrode system?

A: In the two-electrode system, CE and RE are connected jointly to one electrode, while WE and SENSE are connected jointly to the opposite electrode, and then the entire potential is measured, including the potential at the interface between CE and electrolyte, and the potential of the electrolyte itself. Therefore, if the interface potential doesn’t have a critical effect on the entire study, a two-electrode system can be used. 2-electrode system is usually applied in energy storage or conversion, such as batteries, fuel cells, solar cells, etc. It’s also used to measure ultrafast kinetics of electrode processes or measure electrochemical impedance at high frequencies.

The three-electrode system is the most commonly used setup in electrochemistry, in which current flows between CE and WE, the potential between WE and CE is controlled, and the potential is measured between RE and Sense.

Q: Why do we use a three-electrode system for analytical electrochemistry?

A: Electrochemical experiments are carried out in an electrochemical cell. The electrochemical cell works usually with a three electrode system, consisting of working electrode(WE), reference electrode(RE) and counter electrode(CE). The RE is used to monitor the potential of the working electrode. The most commonly used RE are the saturated calomel electrode and the silver/silver chloride electrode (Ag/AgCl). A good RE should have a constant potential with respect to time and temperature which should not be altered by passing a small current also. In this method, a constant potential is maintained on the working electrode by using the feed-back mechanism through the reference electrode. In three-electrode system, reference electrode offers very high resistance. For this reason for the current measurement, another electrode called auxiliary electrode or counter electrode is involved. It completes the cell circuit. Mostly the CE is an inert metal like platinum etc.

The electrode in which modifications are performed by using various electrochemical techniques are called working electrode. In the electrochemical experiment, reaction of interest occurs at the surface of the working electrode. The WE is the main electrode where the potential is controlled and the current is measured. The use of a three-electrode potentiostat allows the potential at the working electrode and the current at the working electrode to be measured with little or no interference or contribution from the other electrodes.
